To qualify to be a Student Intern, an individual must be enrolled in a full-time or part-time academic or vocational program or curriculum which is directly related to the work the Intern would perform for the City.
The Operations Division Intern will be working in the Geographical Information System (GIS) Services section. This division provides coordination, support, and maintenance of the City's GIS systems and GIS services for all City departments. Job Title*:GIS Specialist
Job Description:Insignia Environmental is looking to fill an immediate opening in our downtown Palo Alto, San Francisco, or Encinitas office for a full-time GIS Specialist.

SUMMARY
The GIS Specialist is responsible for obtaining, organizing, and mapping GIS data, identifying efficient methods for and implementing data analysis, and ensuring consistency, accuracy, and quality in all GIS work. Keeps apprised of latest software updates and GIS analysis techniques.
Supports all staff in preparing deliverables.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Obtain and Organize GIS Data
■ Conduct research and collect the best available data independently
■ Organize GIS data so that it is readily identifiable and easy to locate
■ Ensure accuracy and quality in all data sources
■ Conduct fieldwork as needed to prepare GIS datasets and associated deliverables
■ Prepare GPS units (including sub-meter Trimble and Garmin) and provide instruction and support for collecting data in the field
■ Download GPS data from survey-grade GPS (including sub-meter Trimble and Garmin) units and prepare for use in GIS mapping and analysis activities

Analyze Data
■ Research and determine the best methods for analyzing data and implement them in accordance with industry standards

Prepare Deliverables
■ Prepare maps and graphics in support of deliverables
■ Review maps and graphics to ensure the highest level of quality
■ Prepare written reports, letters, and other deliverables, as assigned
■ Coordinate production of maps and other GIS-based products with vendors
■ Assist with production of deliverables, as needed

Other
■ Communicate effectively with all employees and management
■ Exercise sound cost-control measures
■ Positively represent the company
■ Execute other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge
■ Background and/or experience or education in basic cartography
■ Strong knowledge of current GIS and graphics software, including ArcGIS Desktop 10x Suite (including Spatial Analyst, Model Builder, and Data Driven Pages), Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
■ Experience using online and mobile GIS applications, including ArcGIS Online and Collector for ArcGIS
■ Mastery of Microsoft Office products, including organizing, analyzing, and summarizing large Microsoft Excel data sets
■ In-depth knowledge of current GIS analysis practices and techniques

■ Ability to conduct fieldwork, including hiking, ATV use, four-wheel-drive vehicle use
■ Willingness to work fluctuating and/or long hours as necessary
