2009 BAAMA EDUCATION AWARD

The Bay Area Automated Mapping Association (BAAMA) is proud to announce their 2009 Education Award!
The BAAMA Education Award is designed to support and encourage higher education students who use GIS technology, both as a major field of study or as a specialized software tool to support other degree or certificate goals.
Subject matter for the GIS project topics includes, but is not limited to:
- Public health
- Transportation
- Planning
- Environment
- Conservation
- Social and cultural sciences
- Public safety
There are four competition categories:
- Web application: Websites for all competition entries must be active through April 2009.
- Poster: Poster that tells a geographic story and summarizes a work or project
- Map: Map that tells a geographic story and summarizes a work or project
- Other GIS-related business application At least one high quality map or poster must be received in the non-web categories to warrant awarding a prize. If no high quality map or poster is received in these categories, judges can decide not to award a prize.
Deadline: February 13th, 2009; entries must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. PST.
Winners will be announced on March 6th and posted on BAAMA’s web site
PRIZES
- First-place winner will be provided an Education Awards check for $2500.
- Each of the second- and third-place winners will be provided $1500 and $1000, respectively.
- First-, second-, and third-place winners all receive Individual Membership to BAAMA for the 2008-09 fiscal year.
All Education Award winners will receive complementary entry to CalGIS on April 6 - 9, 2009, Sacramento, where they will make a presentation about their work.
All awardees will receive a letter of recognition. Winners will be announced in the BAAMA Journal and at CalGIS 2009.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Submittals in the four categories will be judged and ranked based on the following criteria:
1. PROJECT SCOPE AND APPROACH
2. CONCEPT AND ORIGINALITY: Is it an innovative map or are there a hundred like it out there already? How much of the work is borrowed from the work of others?
3. CARTOGRAPHIC DESIGN: Artistic Merit and Cartographic presentation. Clarity of Communication - how well does the map communicate the information it was designed to portray? Quality of Graphical Composition - is information appropriately presented and at an appropriate level of refinement? Given the intended audience for the map, is the cartographic design fitting? Website projects will be evaluated on website design, interface, and ease of use, in addition to other criteria listed above.
4. SIGNIFICANCE: How does the project hold significance or potential impact related to a target population or real-world issue?
5. TECHNOLOGY: What type of technology is used? Is the design efficient? How innovative is the use of GIS software?
6. RELIABILITY/COMPATABILITY: The product has to be ROBUST. A great looking website that crashes all the time isn't much of a success. A big part of web design is knowing how to deal with the web environment, particularly system crashes, freeze-ups, color palette problems, screen resolutions, download times, cross-platform issues, and general presentation stability. When this is done well, a site becomes transparent and usability becomes ubiquitous. A high level of design in this regard deserves to be rewarded.
MISC NOTES:
• Judges shall use Internet Explorer 7.0 or higher, or Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or higher, with a true color monitor.
• Judges will be solicited from the membership of BAAMA. A panel of three judges will evaluate each application.
• When a map is submitted, the competition director will make an initial evaluation of the map to determine whether the quality is minimally acceptable, the map is generally working, and appropriate citations and credits are given. If problems exist, the director may decline the entry with comments or instructions to the entrant. Once the director accepts the map for judging, the entrant will be notified that the map has been successfully entered into the competition.
ELIGIBILITY
To apply, an individual must satisfy all requirements below:
1. A student enrolled full-time in a certificate program, undergraduate, or graduate program from the nine Bay Area counties (may attend any 2-year or 4-year program). Proof of student status must be submitted with the application – a copy of the applicant’s current semester schedule printed from their registration system.
2. The applicant must be an individual student who is a BAAMA member or a student who is enrolled in a college or university that is a BAAMA educational sponsor. Applicants may submit a BAAMA membership application along with his/her application.
3. Applications would be based on projects completed during the January 2008 to February 2009 calendar year.
WHAT TO SUBMIT
• A completed application form (attached).
•A map/map series/project printout, which summarizes the findings and conclusions of the project that uses geospatial technology (to support the application form). Screenshots of project work will be accepted; however, cartographic and other project design will be evaluated in the screenshot. List URL to web application, if applicable.
•Please submit application and project/map in Adobe PDF format. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis. Convert to PDF at Abode’s website: https://createpdf.adobe.com/ .
EDUCATION AWARD RULES
• All work must be the original work of the entrant. Use of third party or commercial technology is permitted, but must be appropriately cited. The data, if not produced by the entrant, must also be appropriately cited.
•Applicants may enter as many times as they wish, but can only win one prize.
•Up to four applicants may enter the same project (if they each had primary responsibilities in the group project).
•If appropriate, the same map may be entered in both award categories.
•Entries must have been created between November 2008 and February 2009.
•Entries must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. PST February 13th, 2009.
•Web sites for all competition entries must be active through April 2009.

The Laguna Foundation in partnership with the Milo Baker Chapter of the California Native Plant Society is seeking an intern to collect and assemble new and existing data for Cunningham Marsh, a privately held preserve designed to protect a unique oligotrophic marsh and associated rare and endangered plants. Work may include using a GPS to collect data at the site and assembling existing data by contacting/interviewing botanists and other conservation professionals. The final product will be one or more maps that clearly display the data and will serve as a resource to staff and volunteers working in the field. Work will be supervised by the Restoration Program Director and CNPS representatives as needed. This is a great opportunity to do real conservation work in Sonoma County that will contribute directly to the management and preservation of endangered plants in an unusual ecosystem.
Qualifications:

NASA announces a call for graduate fellowship proposals to the NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) program for the 2009-2010 academic year. This call for fellowship proposals solicits applications from accredited U.S. universities on behalf of individuals pursuing Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Earth and space sciences, or related disciplines. The purpose of NESSF is to ensure continued training of a highly qualified workforce in disciplines needed to achieve NASA's scientific goals. Position Description:
We have some extremely important work for GIS specialists that are willing to lend their data editing expertise to our campaign. We are updating precinct shapefiles we have to bring them up to 2008 changes and vastly improve their accuracy.
Why is this important? The ground game we have in place is the largest ground game in the history of political campaigns. An example of this is Virginia where we have not one but 44 campaign headquarters throughout the state. So we have boots on the ground, but in many case they are using poor quality and outdated precinct files, so the work we do here could make a major impact in states like New Hampshire, Virginia, Ohio, New Mexico, Michigan, Missouri and Pennsylvania. But we need to do this now and we need to do it fast.
I put together a 10-page help document (here: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ddpmrpng_11ffh4gxgm) that includes about 20 minutes worth of training video’s. It’s not a lot, but read/watch them thoroughly. If we end up with 100 editors, we will fail if we have 100 different methods producing different results.

Position Description:
We have some extremely important work for GIS specialists that are willing to lend their data editing expertise to our campaign. We are updating precinct shapefiles we have to bring them up to 2008 changes and vastly improve their accuracy.
Why is this important? The ground game we have in place is the largest ground game in the history of political campaigns. An example of this is Virginia where we have not one but 44 campaign headquarters throughout the state. So we have boots on the ground, but in many case they are using poor quality and outdated precinct files, so the work we do here could make a major impact in states like New Hampshire, Virginia, Ohio, New Mexico, Michigan, Missouri and Pennsylvania. But we need to do this now and we need to do it fast.
I put together a 10-page help document (here: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ddpmrpng_11ffh4gxgm) that includes about 20 minutes worth of training video’s. It’s not a lot, but read/watch them thoroughly. If we end up with 100 editors, we will fail if we have 100 different methods producing different results.

Position Description:
The San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI), a center for environmental research and monitoring on the San Francisco Bay Area region, is accepting applications for an intern to assist SFEI programs with Geographic Information System (GIS) tasks. The recruit would work closely with a project manager on specific GIS-related tasks. Tasks will include photo interpretation of wetland/riparian vegetation, editing polygon and polyline data, map production, GIS database development and generation of spatial statistics in support of the Wetland Science, Historical Ecology and Information Technology Programs. Strong computer skills and data organization are required. Additional tasks may include orthorectification of historical aerial photography, georectification of historical maps, and identification of historical habitats.
