Santa Rosa Junior College is offering a great new class, GIS 53 – Cartography in GIS. This class combines the concepts and theories behind cartography with a practical application in ArcGIS. Students will learn how to create informative maps, which allows the message to be clearly interpreted. They will also learn tricks along the way to make even those simple "quick and dirty" maps more elegant.

The class is Wednesday nights 5:00 – 10:00 at the Petaluma Campus. The first day of class is this Wednesday, January 13th with a start time of 5 PM. Due to the current budget constraints roll will be taken promptly.

For the rest of the semester classes will begin with a lab between 5:00 – 6:30, thus giving us professionals a little leeway in getting to class prior to the start of lecture.

Global warming and sea-level rise couples with habitat loss and urbanization
are the greatest threats to wetland biodiversity. Our research program goal
is to evaluate the effects of projected sea-level rise on the endangered
species of San Francisco Bay salt marshes. Applicant will gain experience in
climate change science and endangered species research using a variety of
ecological data collection and analysis techniques.

Duties: Biological field technician is needed to assist in field work and
data analysis in evaluating the effect of climate change and sea-level rise
on the salt marsh endangered species. Field work will be done in San
Francisco Bay estuary. Main duties will include: elevation surveys with an
RTK GPS unit and vegetation surveys (50%), water level logger monitoring
(<10%), avian predation surveys(<10%), channel mapping(<10%), data analysis
using ArcGIS and Excel (50%) and other office duties as assigned.

Requirements: Applicant should possess a willingness to work in conditions
requiring hiking long distances doing elevation and vegetation surveys.
Applicant should be comfortable on small boats and in heavy, urban traffic
conditions. Experience with the operation of 4WD vehicles and boats,
computers and file management, and familiarity with San Francisco Bay
wildlife and plant species a plus. Experience using ArcGIS is necessary.
Applicant will often work independently.

Technician may be asked to work long hours (including early morning or
evening hours and some weekend days) to accomplish fieldwork. Good physical
condition, a current driver's license, and a good driving record are
required. Applicants must be able to lift 40 lbs.

Work will potentially begin in early January, 2010

Wind Energy Research Assistants (GIS) - Seasonal Staff

H. T. Harvey & Associates is a premier ecological consulting firm based in Northern California. We apply our expertise to create ecologically sound solutions for our clients’ complex natural resource challenges. Currently we are implementing a comprehensive study examining bat and bird collisions with wind turbines in the Montezuma Hills, California. The Montezuma Hills Wind Resource Area is located near Fairfield, CA and the Sacramento River. The California Energy Commission is funding this study through a grant from their Public Interest Energy Research program.

We are seeking capable GIS research assistants to conduct intensive mortality searches for bats and birds in existing wind energy facilities this fall season from August 10 to October 14, 2009. The positions are seasonal. Fieldwork will include surveys involving extensive hiking, GPS data acquisition and data entry.

Applicants should have an interest in gaining field research experience and/or internship credit. These positions pay between 8-10 per hour. There will be a four day training period that will be required (survey protocols, safety and scheduling) and the work involves 10 day periods in the field with 4 day breaks between survey periods.

Clark University Human-Environment Regional Observatory (HERO) undergraduate research program

Dear Undergraduate Geography Students and Faculty Who Advise Them,

I am delighted to announce that the Clark University Human-Environment Regional Observatory (HERO) undergraduate research program, of which I'm the Director, has just been awarded a major NSF grant to take HERO to the national level! So we are very excited.

I would like to ask, Would you please help us spread the word at about HERO at your institution? This award means we must recruit students from outside Clark.

Our URL is: http://www.clarku.edu/hero where students can find a brochure and all sorts of info. This summer we will be conducting a set of projects that use remote sensing, to monitor either Massachusetts forests or suburban Boston lawns. Some of our inquiries will be grounded entirely in remote sensing, while others will use remote sensing to answer landscape ecology or social science research questions. Thus we value a range of student backgrounds, from human and environmental geography, as well as GIScience.

Students will be paid $4000 for 8 weeks, $300/wk for room/board, transportation costs to/from Worcester, and, if their research productivity is good, an expenses-paid trip to the March 2010 annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers (in D.C.) to present their research results.

Application deadline is Sunday March 1.

There are no formal prerequisites for students to be accepted into the HERO program save an inquisitive mind and a willingness to learn. Of course, some background in urban studies, landscape ecology, and/or remote sensing is helpful. Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Also, as you probably know, NSF is mega-keen that we succeed in matriculating women and persons from other underrepresented groups.

Department: Facilities Division - Asset Management Department
Timeframe: Summer 2009
The City and County of San Francisco - Airport Commission is currently seeking highly motivated college undergraduates eager to participate in our summer intern GIS program. Qualified interns will work alongside the GIS Administrator and the section leaders for the Asset Management Department within the Facilities Division serving to support the development, maintenance and data input to the central Geographic Information System (GIS). Work will be compiled on a project per project basis involving different departments such as utilities, electrical, and civil engineering sections, as well as survey and airfield operations groups. Primary duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Research scanned and archived documentation such as marked-up drawings, as-builts, imagery, orthophotography and GPS field surveys or tabular data to update existing central GIS database
• Work alongside section leaders to support the various GIS services and requests as administered by department and implemented by the Asset Management Department
• Support development, maintenance, and data updates to the airport basemap, building floor plans, utility, infrastructure, and environmental data stored in the central GIS database
• Capture and collect data in the field for modifications to the GIS database and web interface adhering to prescribed Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and agency standards and procedures
The qualified candidate will be familiar with symbols, terminology, and accepted standards and procedures in GIS and mapping, GIS data development and conversion, and will possess basic knowledge of principles of data collection. Prior experience with geospatial technology is not required and training will be provided as necessary. Preferred qualifications include experience in data collection for use in GIS, including GPS, and the ability to read and interpret specific procedural guidelines pertaining to GIS support, including locally developed documents. Work will be completed in a supervised environment that allows for individual work effort and independence however, assigned work will be monitored at various stages to ensure compliance with established standards and procedures.
